A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
