Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
